The Higgins (Background/History)
It was 1910 when Irish American, copper tycoon Thomas Higgins conceived his namesake Los Angeles office building. Designed by architects Arthur L. Haley and A.C Martin, the Beaux Arts classic was turning heads from the beginning. The building was the proud landlord to the 1st privately owned power plant, General Petroleum who occupied the buildings basement as well as 6 floors from 1934-1949.
The building's name was changed to the LA County Engineer Building as the department was a tenant from 1952-1977. One of the most note-worthy tenants early on was the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of LA. In 2002 Andrew Meieran & Marc Smith resuced the building from derelict. They brought on developer Barry Shy where 135 new lofts were born and the buildings name was restroed to The Higgins.
